Secretary’s Report

Up to Contents

It has been a few years now since we have had an A.G.M., perhaps we should re-name it as a tri-annual event as, at least try, we do.

When I started writing this report I was addressing myself to the sad and untimely death of Pat Byrne R.I.P. I was also upset to hear the very sad news of the death of Aiden Tyrell (R.I.P.), Alec’s son. On behalf of the Club and all the membership, I want to extend the deepest of sympathies to Alec and his family. May he rest in peace.

Pat Byrne was a very skilled and experienced player with a rating in excess of 1600. He was a gentleman in every regard, and a most courteous and reliable team member. He is missed considerably by all of us who knew him. This year the club membership discussed a suggestion that we establish a tournament in his honour – The Pat Byrne Memorial Tournament – and I wholeheartedly agree with this suggestion. May he rest in peace.

We continue to be based in Ierne Sport and Leisure Club and overall I think this arrangement is working well. Recently I received a letter from the management of the centre reminding us that children are not allowed in the bar. While this is an issue that is primarily the responsibility of the parents, we all have an obligation to ensure that the terms of our tenure here are adhered to properly. Club members are directed to the notes included in this report re our meeting of 16th June 2003. Over the past number of years we have had quite a lot of new members, particularly children and young people, all of whom we most warmly welcome.

Some Club members have had a number of notable successes. Karl Vernor became the Junior Irish Champion in 2002. Gerry MacElligott won the major section in Kilkenny 2001 and likewise, Ciaran Quinn won the same title in 2000. Bernard Boyle had a few notable wins: outright winner of the Malahide Intermediate Section 2003; outright winner second section Drogheda 2000; joint winner second section Drogheda 2001 and 2003; John Loughran increased his rating to the point where he became eligible to play in the Senior Section of the Irish Championships, posting a respectable score of 3 out of 9 and this was also a great achievement. John also achieved joint first place with Bernard in Drogheda 2001. Eamonn Pitts continues his good work as chairperson of the Irish Chess Union and for this we are grateful to him for his hard work and helpful contributions to Irish Chess. While these are tremendous achievements for the individuals themselves, they are also good for the Club in that they increase the profile and standing of the Club and for this we are proud to be associated with them. In a more modest way, a number of other players have increased their rating and playing strength, which has also been good for the club.

Congratulations should also be extended to the various teams and the reports, all of which I received from team captains, can be read in the following pages. However, some of their achievements should be noted here. Kevin Murray led his team to victory and promotion in the B.A. Cup in 2003 – an excellent result. Victor Murray and Martin Burke handsomely won board prizes in the Ennis Shield 2002/2003 as did Larry Daly in the B.A. Cup in the 1999/2000 season.

Congratulations must also go to Peter Scott for his continued work on developing his Chess Leagues Results Page on the web. This is an excellent resource for the club and Irish chess players in general. Likewise to John and Ciaran for their work on the Elm Mount Web site.

My apologies in advance if I have omitted any other outstanding achievements by club members in my report due to over sight.

I include the notes from the meeting of 16 June 2003 below in preparation for the A.G.M.

NOTES RE MEETING OF 16 JUNE 2003

This meeting was called with a view to planning for an A.G.M. and also dealt with a number of other items as set out below.

PRESENT:

John Loughran, Ciarain Quinn, Alec Tyrrell, Bernard Boyle, Hugo Oliveira, Peter Mc Grath, Eugene Mc Morrow, Hugh Forkin, Victor Murray, Oliver Dunne, Liam Daly, Sean Davoren, Pat Fitzsimons, Justin Mulrooney, Gerry MacElligott, Francis Doherty, Karl Vernor, Eugene Donohoe (notes), Kevin Murray, Gerry Barry.

If I have left anyone out, apologies, and please let me know. Also if there are any glaring inaccuracies, please let me know and I will amend before putting the printed version on the noticeboard.

AGENDA:

  1. AGM.             Will be held on 8th Sept. Reports should be submitted in word documents to the secretary before 28th July at the absolute latest. I would appreciate getting them sooner if possible, as I will be away on holiday for most of August. This is to cover the last three seasons of the leagues, highest scoring players and special achievements. Reports are due from Gerry MacElligott, Pat Fitzsimons, Eugene McMorrow, Peter Scott, Kevin Murray and Francis Doherty. Gerry Mac has offered to do the photocopying. John Loughran has offered to run a fun/handicapped blitz on the night. The trophies will be organized by Gerry Mac and Fred.

  1. CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS.              Will be organized by John Loughran. Documentation to follow outlining organization, rules etc., which were outlined at the meeting and which will be strictly adhered to.

  1. LEAGUES.     We potentially have three teams in the Heidenfeld next season, which could be problematic. For discussion at the AGM.

  1. LCU AGM.    The treasurer is resolving the matter over fees. The club will be represented by at least Pat Fitzsimons.

  1. NOISE AND MOBILE PHONE USAGE.               Members are requested to observe dignified respect for the chess playing room. Mobile phones should be switched off. Silence should be observed. Casual games, conversation and post-game analysis should happen in the bar.

  1. ADDITIONAL ROOM?       The possibility of acquiring an additional room was explored. This could be used for coaching. Gerry Barry agreed to check this out.

  1. COACHING.             John Loughran and Gerry Mac agreed to organise some coaching.

  1. FEES AND EQUIPMENT.               The possibility of a fee increase was discussed especially in the light of deteriorating equipment. The treasurer will assess our current financial situation and make recommendations. Gerry Barry will do a stock take and check out all equipment, especially the clocks. We also need new score sheets.

  1. SETTING UP AND TIDYING UP.              All members are requested to take their share of setting up boards and especially putting boards, pieces and clocks away when finished and at the end of the night. It is selfish and unreasonable to expect others to do this for one.

Eugene Donohoe.

Armstrong Cup 2002/3 season

The usual plan for the year was to avoid relegation to division 2. This did not seem an especially onerous task as we had been able to do so for years. However, on this occasion things went wrong and we finished half a point behind Phibsboro “B”  and we got relegated.

Why did we fail on this occasion? I think there were a number of reasons. First none of us was playing consistently well and secondly (due to illness and work commitments) only three of the team managed to play all eleven games. In fact ten games were played by substitutes. Although the substitutes did very well (scoring five from ten) these results were, naturally, on the lower where we would hope to clean up.

The team seemed to be scoring just about enough to stay in division 1 until we suffered a severe body blow in round 10. In round 10, for the first time in over 25 years, the first team lost every game in a match: Rathmines/Crumlin 8 – 0 Elm Mount.

Alan MacDonagh (after a non descript start: 5 draws) managed 4/5 in his last 5 games to finish on 4.5/10, loosing only one game all year. This made him the most prolific scorer on the team.

The other scores for the team were:

John Loughran 5.5/11,  Gerard MacElligott 4.5/11,  Oliver Dunne 4.5/9,  Ray O’Rourke 3/9,  Bernard Boyle 3/11,  Ciaran Quinn 2.5/10,  Fred Armstrong 1.5/7, Gerry Barry 1.5/2,  Sean loftus 0.5/2,  Ander Gamez 1/1,  Alek Tyrrell 1/1,  Hugo Olivera 0.5/2,  Gerry Behan 0.5/1,  Eugene Donohoe 0/1.

Heidenfeld Trophy - Team Report 1999/2000 Season

Up to Contents

The team for the season was as follows :-

            Name                          Grading

            Sean Loftus                  1670

            Bernard Boyle              1639

            Pat Byrne                     1606

            Donal O’ Danachair      1587

            Ray Hearty                   1544

            Pat Fitzsimons              1551

            Alec Tyrrell                  1574

            Greg Coyle                   1481

We were also assisted by the following players during the season,  John Loughran, Karl Vernor, Gerry Behan, Victor Murray, Eugene McMorrow,  Stephen O’ Sullivan, Kevin McGrane, Tom O’ Flynn and Peter Scott.

As there were only eleven teams in the league for that season, we had ten rounds of matches to play and our overall record was a disappointing played 10, won 2, drew 2 and lost 6, with a points total of 31.5, leaving us just above the relegation zone. As will be seen from the above, we needed a total of 17 players to fulfill our 80 games owing to the unavailability of regular team members on a number of occasions. Indeed only three of our team played in every round, Sean Loftus, Bernard Boyle and Pat Byrne.

We started the season well with two draws against St. Benildus and Lucan and a 4.5 – 3.5 win over Portmarnock before being defeated by all of our remaining opponents, except for Rathmines whom we defeated 5-3.

Best individual performances were from Bernard Boyle on Board 2 with a creditable score of 5 out of  10 with 4 wins, 2 draws and 4 losses while I achieved a score of 5 out of 8 on board seven with 3 wins, 4 draws and one loss.

Overall, while we did not have a particularly successful season, it is worth noting that the six teams who beat us, Malahide, Tallaght, Drogheda, Phibsborough, Bray/Greystones and Celbridge had higher ratings than us with the ratings gap being most significant on the higher boards.

Heidenfeld Trophy - Team Report  2000/2001 Season

Up to Contents

The team for the season was as follows :-

            Name                          Grading

            Sean Loftus                  1681

Pat Fitzsimons              1641

            Bernard Boyle              1637

            Stephen O’ Sullivan      1640

            Kevin McGrane            1598

            Pat Byrne                     1555

            Donal O’ Danachair      1595

            Alec Tyrrell                  1598

The above were the Elm Mount A Team. Ray Hearty had dropped out to pursue a course of study in DCU while Greg Coyle had joined the Elm Mount B team in the Heidenfeld captained by Peter Scott. Stephen O’ Sullivan and Kevin McGrane replaced them.

We were also assisted by the following players during the season,  Sean Davoren, Kevin Summons Walsh, John O’ Driscoll and Hugh Forkin.

As there were only ten teams in the league for that season, we had nine rounds of matches to play.

We started the season well with a “local derby” win by 5-3 against Peter Scott’s Team. We also managed wins against Lucan, Rathmines,  and Drogheda with draws against Tallaght/Rathfarnham and Bray/Greystones.  Our defeats were at the hands of Celbridge, Kilkenny and UCD. As a result, our overall record was a much improved, won 4 drew 2 and lost 3 with a points total of  36, 4.5 points more than the previous season when we played a round more.

Best individual performances were from Stephen O’ Sullivan who scored a creditable 6 out of  9 on board 4 and from Pat Byrne who scored 5.5 out of 8 on board 6. Sadly Pat passed away later in the year following  a serious illness and has been missed by his friends and colleagues in the Club ever since.

Heidenfeld Trophy - Team Report  2001/2002 Season

Up to Contents

The team for the season was as follows :-

            Name                          Grading

            Anton Taloschi

            Gerry Barry                  1686

Sean Loftus                  1681

Kevin McGrane            1655

Pat Fitzsimons              1626

Alec Tyrrell                  1615

Eugene Donogue          1518

Greg Coyle                   1492

The above were the Elm Mount A Team for the 2001/02 season. It was significantly changed from the previous seasons line-up. Donal O’ Danachair had decided to take a break from chess, while Stephen O’ Sullivan could not guarantee his availability owing to work commitments. Bernard Boyle moved up to play in the Armstrong Cup. Eugene Donogue and Greg Coyle joined the team having played for the Elm Mount B Heidenfeld team the previous season, while Gerry Barry had been playing in the Armstrong Cup. Anton Taloschi was a new club Member.

We were also assisted by the following players during the season,  Sean Davoren, Kevin Summons Walsh, John O’ Driscoll, Hugh Forkin, Fred Armstrong and Stephen O’ Sullivan.

We had eleven rounds of matches to play and just like the previous season we started  with a “local derby” win of 5-3 against Peter Scott’s Team. We followed up this result with draws against Finglas and Rathmines and a win against Phibsborough. Unfortunately our results nose-dived after that  with successive defeats to Dunlaoghaire, Malahide and Bray. Our form then recovered somewhat with two narrow (4.5 – 3.5) wins against Kilkenny and Fawkes . Our final two games, against UCD and Drogheda,  resulted in two further defeats by 1.5 – 6.5 and by 2.5 – 5.5 respectively. As a result, our overall record was 4 wins, 2 draws and five losses giving us a points total of 37 after a deduction of one one point for a default in the final round.

Best individual performances were from myself with 7 points out of a possible eleven, involving 4 wins, 6 draws and one loss on board 5. Sean Loftus on board 3 got a score of  5 out of  11, Alec Tyrrell scored 5 out of  9 and Eugene Donogue also scored five points from 10 matches on boards 6 and 7 respectively.

Heidenfeld Trophy - Team Report  2002/2003 Season

Up to Contents

The team for the season was as follows :-

            Name                          Grading

            Hugo Oliviera                 UG

            Gerry Barry                  1666

Sean Loftus                  1633

Kevin McGrane            1597

Pat Fitzsimons              1614

Alec Tyrrell                  1619

Eugene Donogue          1560

Gerry Behan                 1512

The above were the only Elm Mount Team in division 2 for the 2002/03 season. It was changed somewhat from the previous season’s line-up with Gerry Behan moving up from the Elm Mount B team recently relegated from the Heidenfeld and Hugo Oliviera joining the team from January 2003 onwards.

We were also assisted by the following players during the season,  David Fitzsimons, Martin Burke, Kevin Summons Walsh, Victor Murray, Peter Scott, Mark Rynne, Greg Coyle and Eugene McMorrow.

We had eleven rounds of matches to play and began badly with a 2.5 – 5.5 reverse at home to Lucan and a 6 –2 defeat away to Drogheda. We followed up these poor results, however, with a 5.5 – 2.5 defeat of Kilkenny at home and a 4.5 – 3.5 win away to Faugh’s to get us back on track. A narrow 5 – 3 defeat away to Celbridge who out-pointed us on most boards left us with a total of 17.5 points out of forty after five rounds. After Christmas our improved form continued with a 5.5 – 2.5 home win over Bray followed a narrow loss by 3.5 – 4.5 away to Malahide. We then  trounced both Phibsborough and Finglas by the score of  6 - 2 with a creditable draw against eventual league winners Wicklow in between. In the final round we defeated the other promoted side Rathmines by a score of 4.5 – 3.5. As a result, a season which started with two heavy defeats was turned around to give us our best performance since 1994/95 when we came within a half point of promotion to Division One. Our overall record was 6 wins, 1 draw and four losses giving us a points total of 47. Clearly if the team can maintain the same level of progress in the forthcoming season, we may be in a position to challenge for promotion again.

Best individual performances were from Gerry Behan (7/11), myself with 6.5/11, Sean Loftus with 6/10 on board 2 and Hugo Oliviera with 4 points out of a possible 6 on board 1.
