The Elm Mount Chess Club website is located at the following web address:-
http://www.elmmountchess.com.
The top of our homepage is shown below. From the links you can see that it
contains extensive club records from 1999 as well as links to other chess sites.
Of note here is Peter Scott's Chess League site which currently gives up to date
Leinster league results. Irish Chess Online has a diary of forthcoming
events and some results of past events as well as the current rating list. The
Irish Chess Archive is excellent for news of Irish Championships and olympiads,
past and recent. The Week in Chess is excellent for up to date international
news.
The quality of news pertaining to our club depends on the contributers and thanks are due to those mentioned on our homepage, but in particular to Donal Harrington for his regular updates on the club championships.
In all our site comprises over 40 web page files. It has attracted over 5000 visits since 2000, including 3000 visits in the past 16 months. It has great potential for attracting new players as well as keeping current members informed, but depends on regular contributions for this. In particular I appeal to committee members for information for regular updates.

Popup Blocker
Qleague | ||
During the year, reports were recieved from two members concerned about possible aggressive advertising emanating from our host and of a problem of a computer hanging when our results page was visited. This problem was alerted to others using mass emails by a concerned member. Despite these email alerts no further complaints were recieved regarding these issues.
Recently some websites have become more aggressive in their advertising strategies, using popup windows and in some cases, spyware, which can record a user's browsing to a company's advantage to help them with marketing. Some websites, though not ours to date, can be used to transmit viruses.
Appropriate steps to take against these problems include the installation and constant updating of anti-virus software. Another strategy is to install a popup blocker such as AdAware, which blocks 95% of popup windows. It also searches for and allows users to eliminate so called spyware from their system. Mostly it just allows users to delete cookies which are small files containing information about your operating system etc. It can be downloaded for free from the following link: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/.
This location was chosen when free webspace was hard to find before 1999. Our address was registered with all the leading search engines such as Yahoo, Alta Vista, Excite, Google. Our site can most easily be found by typing "Elm Mount Chess Club" into Google. As a result many other chess websites have links to us at the address above. Most of these links would be lost if the site moved and we would lose readers if we ask them to click from a forwarding address.
We have attracted numerous foreign players to the club in no small part due to the high visibility internationally of our website.
The username and password can be passed on between webmasters and their assistants without compromising the privacy of other sites.
The alternative is to set up a new web address using someone's free Eircom webspace for example. There would be no advertising but also use of advanced web technologies is limited there, which would limit the site's future interactivity. Readers would inevitably be lost due to dead links, incorrect information in search engines, reader frustration or even fortunecity deleting a forwarding page.
As well as installing and updating anti-virus software another precaution against the spread of viruses is to minimise the use of mass e-mails. A computer user's e-mail system can pass on worm viruses via e-mail, without the user's knowledge. Hitting "Reply All" to a mass email automatically shares whatever worms you have with others and so should be avoided unless necessary.
12/18 members who attended the AGM in Dec 2004 visit our website occasionally.
